YTL Wayfinding

Please Take Your Seats

This marks our second collaboration with the YTL Live team on their landmark Arena project in North Bristol, focused on an extensive and complex wayfinding brief. Our scope covered both internally and externally, with four publicly accessible floors, extensive, sprawling back-of-house corridors, layout of the arena’s perimeter and a broader scheme across the public realm to and from key transport routes.

The result: a durable, intuitive wayfinding system built to last and enhance the energy built into the core of YTL Arena experience.

Feel the noise

In addition to designing a resilient wayfinding system, the original brief emphasized the importance of incorporating experiential moments. Inspired by the interior mesh material developed by Grimshaw, we used this as a starting point to integrate dynamic lighting behind mesh sections of the physical signage. This lighting responds in harmony with the environment, creating a coordinated and immersive experience.

Structured to Inform

The biggest challenge we faced was creating a consistent system that could adapt to a wide range of signage scales and complexities. By anchoring all data and datum to a simple grid informed by the typography, we found a solution that delivers information clearly and quickly.
