In a fragile healthcare system, a workforce under sustained pressure is often left unequipped to manage the rapid pace of change. Limited opportunities for leadership development and collaboration can create friction precisely where transformation is most needed.
The King’s Fund identified a gap in the promotion of middle managers to senior roles, many of whom were advancing without leadership guidance or support needed to pilot teams and foster a needed sense of community. What began as an internal experiment quickly evolved into Shiftworks, a cultural intervention within the UK health and care system, designed to drive meaningful change from the middle-out.
Shiftworks is a digital platform and community space that fosters that intervention through concise, digital courses that respect the demanding schedules of health and care professionals, prioritising engagement and real-world application over box-ticking completion.

Shiftworks needed a system that could meet its ambitions head-on. We used the classic tile puzzle as our foundation for the brand, a metaphor for the ever-shifting nature of a workforce striving toward a greater purpose. The result is an animated, dynamic identity that breathes character into every touchpoint, from bespoke icons to a rich tapestry of patterns and motion systems that weave continuity, energy, and purpose throughout the entire experience.
