Where Next

After recent changes to senior leadership and a hard-won grade increase from Ofsted, City of Bristol College was radiating with positivity. The perfect opportunity to draw a line in the sand, shout about its improvements, and reaffirm itself as the Bristol College.

Working alongside leadership, staff, and students, we wrote a simple proposition: Where Next? A question intended to challenge the college, and its people to be ambitious, self-examine, and continually improve.

Keep Moving Forward

Our education system often appears linear and puts enormous pressure on people from an early age. 'Get this grade, to go on that course, to get this qualification, to get that job, to climb that ladder'. However, our lives and careers are rarely straightforward. They meander and alter course unexpectedly.

To compliment our proposition Where Next? we created a visual identity around the idea of change and forward momentum. Energetic typography, shifting gradient palettes, and dynamic graphics that evolve and bend – all to reinforce the message that life is a journey and what matters most is to embrace its twists and turns with confidence and ambition.

Beating A New Path

At the heart of the identity is a morphing and bending graphic path that can be used to highlight and frame imagery and create illustrations, animations, or transitions for web and mobile.

The path is vibrant and colourful adding depth to compositions and acting as a visual representation of our central motifs of change and momentum.

Parts Of A Whole

As part of the identity development, we devised a system of sub-branding for the three academic provisions – Further Education, Higher Education, and Apprenticeships. This gives each provision it's own presence within the walls of the college as well as providing a structure for launching new provisions in the future.

The college has five campuses (at the time of writing), each with their own area of expertise. 

As part of the roll-out, we redesigned key signage pieces to bring the new identity to life across the city.

For continuity, we designed a common information system that works across all sites but allows each campus it's own gradient colour scheme to highlight its uniqueness within the college as a whole.
